Be a Rebel
Technology demands change. And change here stands for change in outlook (attitude). Every technological progress that human societies have witnessed, were possible because of the liberal attitude that the people embraced. We can quote many examples in history like the transition from hunter-gatherer societies to farming, usage of metal tools followed by industrialization upto modern inventions like electricity, computers, etc. Everything was a major change in those societies and people who accepted them ended up dominating the rest of the world.
To bring about a change in the society we need a rebel. A person who breaks away from the shackles of tradition and is far-sighted to see how this change can improve the lives of humans. Rebels will most often be ridiculed and condemned by the societies coz they deny to "Walk the Line". For many years now, I have been trying to see the advantages of being a liberal or a conservative. Conservatives will hold on to old traditions and are more likely to abide by the rules. Liberals tend to break those rules and follow the unbeaten path. This path is uncertain, it might end up no-where but they atleast tried. Thousands of such off-beat tries lead us to this "change". Once you light the bulb, people will follow the en"lightened" path.
But people always want us to carry on the traditions. Why are we so fond of traditions? The reason could be that traditions give you an identity. They relate you to your ancestors. They tell you what your ancestors thought, what they liked and what they passed on to you. And we keep them alive in the need of keeping that thread alive. But holding on to the tradition is like holding on to your past. The past (history) should only guide you to improve yourselves but not confine your thoughts and your outlook. That's why a rebel in each one of us will make us realize what we are holding onto and what should we be leaning onto. Every new thought, every new idea is a stepping stone towards that much needed change. In want of a better society, in need of a peaceful world, let us all be rebels !

I agree with you. With age we tend to be more conservative than liberal. i guess in old age its anyways too late to try new things!! :)
On a serious note, this blog was inspired by a chapter in Guns germs and steel where Jared Diamond explains how societies who embraced change got an advantage over others who did not. So was just thinking how significant this "liberal" attitude is to our progress in general.
